Mary Elizabeth "Libby" Bryant Church, 92, of Columbia, passed away Sunday, October 26, 2014. Born in Birmingham, AL, she was a daughter of the late L.M. Bryant Sr. and Flora Lynn Bryant.
Libby believed in doing things for the long term - life marriage, employment - and the general enjoyment of all facets of life.
Married to Wyatt Church on December 7, 1940, their first anniversary was marked by the bombing of Pearl Harbor. They were married 60 years before his death in January 2001.
As a military wife, life took her from Birmingham to Jacksonville, FL, Tampa, FL, Camp Bowie, TX, Lawton, OK, Ft. Benning, GA, Alexandria, LA, and back to Birmingham while Wyatt was in New Guinea and Manila with the 38th Division (the Avengers of Bataan) before coming to Ft. Jackson, SC in 1950, then to Heilbronn and Goppingen, Germany, Ft. Jackson, SC, Taegu, Korea, and back to Columbia where they retired.
Libby was an active member of St. Michael and All Angels' Episcopal Church. Mrs. Church retired from South Carolina Federal Savings and Loan. She volunteered at Providence Hospital, and was a member of Forest Acres Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow, was a member of the Retired Officers Wives Club, and Past President of the Settlers Club. Libby was also an avid Gamecock Fan, member of the Gamecock Club, Touchdown Club Board, Tip off, and Dugout Clubs. Gamecock baseball was her favorite.
Her family was her heart and the loves of her life, as was obvious by the display of pictures in her home.
Survivors include her daughter, Donna Church; son, Bill Church; granddaughters, Leigh Ann Lunsford (Alan), Jennifer Palen (Mark); great-grandchildren, Sarah, Laura, Wyatt, Owen, Emily, Avery, Marissa; a great-great-granddaughter, Adelyn; brother, L.M. Bryant, Jr.; sisters, Jane Bodie (Bill), Pat Bryant, Myrtle Clark, Edith Cooper; many nieces and nephews; and godson, Bryan Moeller (Beth).
A funeral service for Libby Church will be held 1 o'clock, Thursday, October 30th, at St. Michael and All Angels' Episcopal Church, with The Reverend Jill Zook-Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Family will greet friends following the service in Sturtevant Hall. Memorials may be made to the church, attn. Endowment Fund, 6408 Bridgewood Rd., Columbia, SC, 29206, or Providence Hospital, 2435 Forest Dr., Columbia, SC 29204. Members of the Forest Acres Rotary Club and Providence Hospital Volunteers and Staff are invited to serve as honorary pallbearers.
