The family of Lillian Imogene "Jean" Kammer, of Columbia, are saddened to announce her passing on January 7, 2023, at the age of 83. She was born in Fort Mill, South Carolina, on June 4, 1939, to Dr. Ira William Ghent and Nellie Ruth Couch Ghent.
Jean graduated from Columbia College of Nursing in 1959 and later married her soul mate and love of her life, retired Army MG Herman C. Kammer, Jr. "Buddy" on April 5, 1961. As a military spouse, she accompanied Buddy on numerous assignments both in the United States and abroad to include; Fort Bragg, NC, Fort Lewis, Washington, DC, Korea, Germany, and many others. Once military life concluded, Jean committed herself to establishing the family's home in Fairfax, Virginia and later Columbia, South Carolina.
Jean was an avid reader and was blessed with an extraordinary memory of stating dates, times, and names on cue with no hesitation. She made every house a home in their travels, was devoted to her family, and loved the company of good friends. She took pride in dressing beautifully and ensuring that her hair was always in a proper coiffure. All who knew Jean can appreciate her love of Chanel No. 5 and her signature red lipstick, as she never left the house without either.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Buddy Kammer; children, Chris Kammer of Irmo, SC, and Paula Moroney (Mike) of Bettendorf, IA; grandchildren, Connor Moroney of Waterloo, IA, and Kaitlyn Moroney of Bettendorf, IA. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Carol Graham.
With her passing, the family would like to acknowledge Dr. Martha Parker Hester, Dr. J. William Phillips, and their staff for the medical care and compassionate support provided to Jean over the years. As well as Jenifer Cheney and previous caregivers for the wonderful love and care.
