LTC Albert Joseph Thurmond, US Army (Ret.), 83, of Columbia, died Saturday, October 13, 2018. Born on October 21, 1934 in New Roads, LA, he was a son of the late Ira and Rosa Albert Thurmond. Al graduated from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA with a bachelor's degree and later retired from the US Army with more than 20 years of service. He was a member and elder of Generation Church of Columbia.

Al is survived by his wife, Helen Stergiou Thurmond of 40 years; sons, Cecil Yonnel Thurmond (Merle), Dino Demetrius Stergiou (Terri), and Niko Demetrius Stergiou (Tammy); sister, Mary Hall; ten grandchildren, Eddie McIntyre III (Showand), Yonnell Jones (Rory Jr.), Yonneka Thurmond (Derrick), Adrian McIntyre, Nathaniel Thurmond, Demarius Thurmond, Brittany Stergiou, Bethany Stergiou, Brandon Stergiou and Alexis Durner (Jason); and 14 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Al is preceded in death by his brother, Roosevelt Thurmond; sister, Eloise Harvey; and two grandchildren, Niko and Jacob Stergiou.

The service for LTC Thurmond will be held at 12:30 PM, Monday, October 22nd at Shives Funeral Home Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. Burial will follow in Ft. Jackson National Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 11:30 o'clock.
