Obituary

Madge Watts Gooding, 87, of Columbia, died Monday, March 4, 2013. Born May 3, 1925, in the Ashwood Community of Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence B. and Fannie Davis Watts. Madge retired from Crafts-Farrow State Hospital after 30 years of service in nursing and physical therapy. Following her retirement, she joined the staff of Columbia Rehabilitation Clinic. An active member of Jackson Creek Baptist Church for over 45 years, Madge served on various committees and was past president of the WMU.
Survivors include her sons, Roy A. and Calvin "Al" Gooding, both of Columbia; granddaughter, Brittany A. Gooding; and her mother, Jo Ann Gooding, all of Columbia; brothers, Marion B. Watts of Columbia and Carl Watts of Bishopville; as well as number nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gooding was preceded in death by her step-mother, Loma Gladden Watts; brothers, Ray, Syrus, Alex and Clarence B. Watts; sisters, Annie Lee Gordon, Bonnie Mitchell, Emma Stone Pratt and Kathleen Poe; and in 1981 by her husband of 35 years, Calvin B. Gooding.
The funeral service for Mrs. Gooding will be held 2 o'clock, Thursday, March 7th, at Jackson Creek Baptist Church, 7778 Two Notch Rd, with The Rev. Dr. Walter Mack Burriss officiating. Burial will follow at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Serving as pallbearers will be Bernie Watts, Van Holmes, Kerry Poe, Lavon Poe, David Mitchell, Jr., and Benjamin Mitchell. Honorary pallbearers will be George Watts, Gerald Watts, Carson Gordon, Jr., Olin Poe, Jason Mitchell, and John Ingram. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock, Wednesday evening, at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Dr., Columbia. Memorials may be made to White Oak Manor, Activities Fund, 3001 Beechaven Rd, Columbia, SC 29204.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of White Oak Manor Nursing Home, and give a special thanks to her niece, Carolyn Mitchell for her endless love and care for Mrs. Gooding.
