Mae W. Roberts, 90, of Greenville, SC, formerly of Chapin, SC, died April 6, 2018 at home surrounded by her family. Born October 27, 1927, in Greenwood, SC, she was a daughter of the late Henry Grady Welch and Hattie Strawhorn Welch.

Mae grew up during the Great Depression. When her parents separated, the courts decided that Mae and her older sister, Margaret would become wards of the state and they were sent to John de la Howe School in McCormick, SC. Mae was 5 at the time and was the youngest child ever admitted to John de la Howe School. She stayed at the school until she graduated from high school and moved to Columbia to live with her older sister Margaret. She attended business school and worked as a secretary and book keeper. At the time of her retirement, she was working at DHEC in Columbia as an administrative assistant and was coordinator for the Crippled Children's Program and Camp Burnt Gin.

Mae was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother and always remembered everyone's birthday sending cards to all. She loved her family and especially enjoyed hosting Christmas Eve every year and Thanksgiving with the family. She was an excellent cook and was especially known for her dressing and her potato salad.

Mae was a very active member of Park Street Baptist Church in Columbia participating in her circle and was in charge of the infant nursery for many years. She also helped with Bible school every year.

Mrs. Roberts is survived by her husband of 69 years, John Fredrick Roberts, her daughter, Dr. Janet Sherran Roberts Edwards (Dr. M. Thomas Edwards, Jr.) of Greenville, SC; her daughter-in-law, Katherine Randolph Roberts of Chapin, SC; grandchildren, Benjamin Thomas Edwards (special girlfriend, Heather Driver); Parks Miller Edwards (Melodie); David Roberts Edwards (fiancé, Brittany Tepedino); Melissa Roberts Cooper (Jamie), Beth Roberts Sharron (Keith), Christopher Desantis- Mallia (Dan); Eric Anthony Mallia; great grandchildren, Justin Greider, Faith Stanberry, Ryan Stanberry, Dylan Stanberry, Brooke Montgomery; and half-sister, Faye Hayden of Appling, GA. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Patrica Roberts Cecil, of Columbia, SC; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, David Stephen Roberts; daughter, Nancy Ellen Roberts Mallia; son-in-law Michael Mallia; grandson John Bradford Edwards; great grandson, Brent Stanberry; brothers William Taggart Welch, James Presley Welch, Henry Grady Welch,Jr. and sister Margaret Elizabeth Welch Jensen.

The funeral service for Mrs. Roberts will be held at 2 o'clock, Monday, April 16, 2018 at Park Street Baptist Church, Columbia, SC, with Pastor Jay Black officiating. Interment will immediately follow in Elmwood cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the funeral beginning at 1 o'clock. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel is assisting the family.
