Mae Ray Sloan, 84, of Columbia, died Thursday, December 1, 2016. Wife of the late William Bryan Sloan, she was born May 15, 1932, in Kershaw County, and was a daughter of the late George and Josephine Ray. She was the 11th child of 13 and was the last surviving.

A member of Ebenezer Holiness Baptist Church and the Fairlawn Family Community Leaders, she worked at Lonnie B. Nelson Elementary School cafeteria for many years making meals and lots of good rolls for the children. She taught students at Killian Christian School how to make biscuits and for many years cooked the meals for camp meeting. She had a love for baking, and while a resident at Summers Landing Assisted Living, made her way into the kitchen and baked her special pound cake. Mae was not only a great cook, but also an avid gardener and had a great love for flowers. She had a gift for caring for others. She spent many hours taking care of the sick and those who needed transportation or even food. She never failed to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

Survivors include daughters, Carol Bryant (Buddy), Linda Powell (Don), and Diane Smith (Jeff); son, Thurmond Sloan (Debbie); also ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

The funeral service for Mrs. Sloan will be held 2 o'clock, Sunday, December 4th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, with The Rev. Kenneth Walter officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Gardens of Columbia. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 o'clock, Saturday at the funeral home, and at other times at Mae's home, 300 Sloan Road, Columbia.
