Magdalen Divis

Mrs. Magdalen Hruby Divis, 97, of Columbia, died on Monday, September 7, 2026. Born on June 8, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Peter Hruby and Jennie Sima
Hruby. She was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband of 68 years George Joseph Divis, daughter Christine Divis, and brother Peter Hruby.

She was proud of her Czechoslovakian heritage and carried it with her through her life. She graduated from Farragut High School as valedictorian of her class and solo chair French Horn. She belonged to many theater and musical groups in the Chicago metropolitan area. She later earned her degree in Nursing from Morton Jr College and became a Registered Nurse. She was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star and provided many solo vocal performances for chapters and conventions. While retired in Avon Park, Fl, she was deeply involved in her church (Union Church) especially the choir, bell choir, Serendipity and Bible Babes groups. She had a strong faith in Jesus and was not ashamed of it. After moving to Columbia SC, she taught Sunday School at Fairlawn United Methodist Church whose members embraced her with great love. Her last years were spent at Rice Estate where she made many friends with residents and staff alike.

She is survived by her children, George Peter Divis (Laureen) of North Fort Myers, FL and Lydia Edmonds (Gary) of Columbia. Grandchildren Crystal Divis, Tiffany Bauwens (Joshua), Lindsay Ubert (Mark), Emily Ganofsky and Peter Ganofsky. Great Grandchildren Erika and Dominik Ubert and Remington Bauwens. She is also survived by her much older sister Emily Marzek and slightly younger brother Paul (Joan) Hruby along with many much-loved nieces and nephews. She expressed her wish to thank Heartsong Hospice (especially Kaley and Tammy) for their compassionate and loving care.

A memorial service will be held at Rice Estate (100 Finley Road, Columbia) at 2 PM on September 18th.
