Marcia B. Thomas., 68, of Winnsboro, died Friday, August 12, 2016. Born in Charleston, SC on June 22, 1948, she was the daughter of Delvin Stanley Backus and Elma Inez Anderson. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Winnsboro and was a 1966 graduate of Saint Andrew's High School. She received her degree in History from Columbia College in 1970. Marcia began her career as a teacher for the Charleston County School District teaching History and Social Studies at Cainhoy High School. She enjoyed a long career in the Mortgage Banking business and retired from Midland Mortgage of Columbia in February 2013 leaving behind many treasured lifelong friends.
Survivors include son, Andrew S. Thomas of Columbia, SC; brother, David B. Backus of Charleston, SC; her mother in law, Margaret Georgiana Fridy Thomas; step-daughter, Elizabeth H. Thomas of Columbia, SC; sister-in-law, Alice T. Shewbart of Franklin, NC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John B. Thomas, Jr.
A service will be held 1 o'clock, Wednesday, August 17th at Bethel United Methodist Church with The Rev. Alice Deal officiating. Burial will be in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock, Tuesday evening at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia.
