Obituary

Margaret Florence Charles Stubbs died peacefully at her home on Saturday, October 8, 2022. Margaret was born in Gainesville, GA on October 22, 1941, to the late Dr. and Mrs. Roland Keith Charles. When the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred less than two months later, Dr. Charles, a colonel and surgeon in the U.S. Army, was called to Europe. Colonel Charles settled his wife and two young children with Mrs. Charles' family in Rock Hill, SC, and served overseas for four years. Those were happy years for Margaret, and she often spoke fondly of her relatives there who cared for her. When she was in sixth grade Margaret, her older brother and mother boarded a military transport in San Francisco and joined Dr. Charles at Camp Hakata on Kyushu Island. Margaret had fond memories of her life there as well. Later, she spent three of her high school years in San Antonio, TX at Fort Sam Houston. The summer before her senior year her father accepted the post of commander of Fort Jackson Hospital. She abruptly moved with her parents and graduated from Dent High School (now middle school) in Columbia, SC. She attended Converse College where she continued to thrive and make many friends. Margaret graduated and worked in Atlanta, GA as a secretary at Citizens and Southern Bank, where she met her husband Donald H. Stubbs. Don decided to attend USC Law School, so they packed up their shared Volkswagen bug and moved to Columbia. There they raised two daughters and contributed widely to the community. In addition to several mainstream teaching positions, at eight months pregnant with her second child, Margaret joined a visionary classroom at the new school within the South Carolina State Hospital (which locals referred to as "Bull Street"). Margaret was active for many years in the Junior League, Daughters of the American Revolution, Gay Gardeners Club, First Presbyterian Church, and neighborhood and community bible studies, many of which she started and led. The highlight of her week was worshiping her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and fellowshipping with friends old and new at First Presbyterian Church. One of several of Margaret's legacies is quietly loving and serving family, friends, and neighbors. She often said, "I don't know what I would do without my friends," and throughout her illness many, many friends of all ages have expressed that sentiment toward her. She is already greatly missed.

Margaret is predeceased by her husband, Don Stubbs, and her brother, Keith Charles (Nancy). She is survived by her daughters, Delia (Kevin) Corrigan and Mary Keith Skinner, sister-in-law Nancy Charles, grandchildren Charlie Corrigan, Sam (Maggie) Corrigan, Edward Corrigan, Justice Skinner, Mai Skinner, Harley Skinner, and great grandson Hudson Corrigan.

The service for Mrs. Stubbs will be held at 2:30 o'clock, Wednesday, October 12th at First Presbyterian Church, 1324 Marion Street Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends following the service in Jackson Hall. A private burial will be held in the churchyard of First Presbyterian Church. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations to local or international missions, particularly those that spread the gospel, was Margaret's desire. First Presbyterian Church gives widely to missions that Margaret supported- checks may be made to First Presbyterian Church, designating missions, 1420 Lady St. Columbia, SC, 29201.
