Marion Daniel (Dan) Christmus, 98, of Columbia, died on Friday, April 4, 2025. Born in Columbia, SC, on January 23, 1927, he was a son of the late Robert Henry and Katie Hedgepath Christmus. Mr. Christmus was a graduate of Columbia High School class of 1943. He later enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in Okinawa. He also served in the S.C. Air National Guard. After his military service, he worked for 40 years as a printer at R.L. Bryan, where he met his wife of nearly 74 years, Verdie. Together they shared many happy years raising their family. They were members of First Presbyterian Church.
In his retirement years Dan enjoyed church and family activities, gardening, vacations, and caring for his home and yard.
Survivors include his sons, Daniel Lewis Christmus (Gaye), of Columbia, Mark Wells Christmus (Elizabeth), of Pomaria, Matthew Dean Christmus (Sherri), of Clover, and John Luke Christmus (Sandy), of Blythewood; grandchildren, Nathan (Jill), Sarah (William), Ben, Sam (Joybelle), Nick, Seth, Haleigh (Thomas), John Luke, Jr., and Cullen; and great-grandchildren, Anna, Kate, Thomas, Evelyn, Coral, Hunter, and Jack.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Verdie Lewis Wells Christmus; siblings, Warren Christmus (Grace), Charles Christmus (Mary Ellen), and Mary Helen Floss.
The funeral service for Mr. Christmus will be held at 2 o'clock, Thursday, April 10th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, with the Rev. Dr. David H. Lauten officiating. Burial will follow in Woodridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home beginning at 1 o'clock.
