Columbia – Marion Richard Owensby, 83, of Columbia, died Thursday, September 10, 2015. Born July 9, 1932 to the late J.B. and Sarah Stevenson Owensby, he was married to Frances Brock for 55 years.

Marion retired as Sergeant First Class from the United States Army after 25 years of service. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. He received numerous medals and awards including the Bronze Star. His family knew him as a wonderful husband and father who loved his church and was loved by everybody.

Surviving are his wife, Frances; a son, Marion, Jr.; daughter, Brenda Thomas; grandsons, David (Angela) Thomas, Donald Thomas, Nick (Erin) Owensby, CJ (Johanna) Owensby, and Daniel Thomas; granddaughters, Kimberly Zepp and Kimberly Owensby; and eight great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Randy Owensby; and sisters, Dorothy Ayers and Flossie Jenkins.

A funeral service will be held Monday, September 14, 2015 at 12:30 o'clock at the Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Rd Ext., Columbia, with burial to follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery with full military honors. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5 until 7 o'clock, at the funeral home.
