Marjorie Hammond Sherwood, 71, died Monday, January 29, 2018, in Hendersonville, TN. Born on January 4, 1947, in Bridgeport, CT, she was a daughter of the late John Hammond Sherwood and Wanda Brauer Sherwood. Marjorie moved with her family to Columbia in 1964, where she joined Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church and graduated from Eau Claire High School.
Marjorie was an active volunteer in church and community activities. She often played concert bells for Mt. Pleasant congregants, and for assisted living and hospice residents. One of her joys was knitting hats for newborns. Her donations found their way to babies as far away as Peru. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to organizations helping children.
Survivors include Marjorie's sister, Dorothea Hart Sherwood of Nashville, TN; sister, Elizabeth Ann Sherwood Murphy and brother-in-law, Larry Vaughan O'Neill of Lafayette, TN; brother, George Bradford Sherwood and sister-in-law, Ann Clark Sherwood of Colts Neck, NJ; sister, Marion Cotter Sherwood of Hendersonville, TN; ten nephews and nieces, seven grandnephews and grandnieces, and eight great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces.
The funeral service for Marjorie will be held at 3 o'clock, Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, 736 Campground Rd., Columbia, SC 29203. It will be conducted by The Rev. Joseph Gambrell and The Rev. John Jordan. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
