Marjorie Stands, 88, of Columbia, SC, died peacefully on May 21, 2014, at The Haven in Columbia. Born May 23, 1925 In Elizabethtown, NC, she is predeceased by her parents, Gladys and James R. Powell of Elizabethtown, NC, and her late husband of 55 years, Dr. Benjamin O. Stands of Lafontaine, Indiana and her late husband, Dr. Joseph E. Wallace, of Columbia, SC.
Marjorie spent years volunteering her time and energy to an enormous list of local organizations and causes that she believed in. She chaired and or was a fund raiser for the SC Philharmonic, The American Red Cross, The Capital Senior Center, Palmetto Health Children's Hospital, The Town Theater, Columbia Garden Club, SC Historical Society, and Columbia Parks and Recreation Foundation to name a few. Marjorie's dedication earned her a Key to the City of Columbia. She loved to travel, garden, ski and was a long time member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church and an avid supporter of the University of South Carolina Gamecock Athletics program.
Survivors include her son, James Walter Stands (Peggy) of Columbia; and three daughters, Nancy Stands Adams (Bill) of Severna Park, Maryland, Deborah Stands Savage (Gordon) of Indonesia and Janice Stands Addison (David) of Columbia; eight grandchildren, Christopher James Stands (Maryanna), Hadyn Stands Gause (Bryan), Georgia Mckeever Cobia (Drake), Marshal James Savage (Sara), William Barrett Adams, Benjamin Griffin Cole, Christina Bianca Savage, Lauren Ashley Addison; and eight great grandchildren.
Private services were held with the family. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Palmetto Health Children's Hospital, c/o Palmetto Health Foundation, PO Box 602575, Charlotte, NC 28260-2575 in memory of Dr. & Mrs. Benjamin O. Stands. Funeral arrangements were handled by Shives Funeral Home.
