Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mark Amoth, who departed this life on April 1, 2025, in Everett, Washington after a courageous battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF).

Mark will be remembered for his vibrant spirit, easy-going nature, and boundless enthusiasm for life. From his early years spent fishing and hiking to his athletic achievements, including helping lead his high school tennis team to a state championship in 1982, Mark approached every aspect of life with passion and dedication.

He was a man of many talents and pursuits. Mark's professional path was diverse: he was an application developer and data analyst, a newspaper writer, a salesman, a commercial painter, and later established his own business, Clear View Window Cleaning. Beyond his professional life, creative expression was important to Mark: he found joy in music—from playing piano with a natural ear for improvisational jazz, excelling with the trumpet, singing in his church choir, and later taking up the penny whistle. He also had a keen eye for photography (capturing nature, street scenes, and special moments), and occasionally wrote poetry.

Mark fell in love with Austin, Texas after relocating there from Columbia several years ago. He embraced everything about the city's unique culture and people, forming a deep bond with the place and considering himself a true Texan at heart. His deep Christian faith was a cornerstone of his life, as was his commitment to staying informed about local and global events.

Those who knew Mark will miss his lively conversations and wonderful sense of humor. His sharp wit would light up a room, and his laughter was truly infectious. He approached discussions with intelligence, thoughtfulness, and curiosity. Mark's compassion for others, especially those facing difficult circumstances, was remarkable. Through his work with Dignity First newspaper and his editorial "What It's Like to be Homeless," he channeled his experiences into advocacy and education. His compassion extended to direct action—on two separate occasions, his intervention saved the lives of men in dire need. He deeply believed that all people deserve dignity, a conviction he expressed powerfully in his writing: "it is our conviction that we are all God's children and as such, deserving of love and respect."

Mark lived life authentically and on his own terms. His independent spirit and desire for autonomy shaped his journey. He connected easily with people from all backgrounds and had an innate ability to see the inherent worth in everyone he met.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Janie Amalene Holloway and Maureen Bernell "Pete" Amoth.

He is survived by his sister, Pamela Baczewski and her husband Paul of Everett, Washington; his brother, Carl Amoth and his wife Bev of Hendersonville, North Carolina; his niece Kristin; and his nephews, Chris and Andrew.
