Martha Alice Bynum Jenkins, 80, of Columbia, died peacefully on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at Prisma Health Richland Hospital following a brief illness. Born on November 30, 1942, in Tupelo, Mississippi, she was a daughter of the late Grover E. and Clara Mae Bynum. Martha is survived by her husband of 57 years, William W. Jenkins.

She graduated from Shannon High School in Shannon, MS and later earned her bachelor's degree from Mississippi University for Women. Martha would continue her education receiving post graduate credit from the University of Memphis. Martha taught elementary education in Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, and would later retire as a teacher's assistant for Richland School District 2. She was a member of North Trenholm Baptist Church where she was actively involved until her health declined. Martha enjoyed serving her church in many capacities, including being a volunteer receptionist and Sunday School class care group leader.

Surviving in addition to her husband are her sons, Steve of Lugoff and Scott of Sturgis, MS; daughter, Alice Heller (Rob) of Columbia; grandsons, Tripp, Taylor, and Will; sister, Betty Homan (Herman) of Shannon, MS; sister-in-law, Carolyn Bynum of VA; as well as many in-laws, nieces, and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Bill Bynum of VA.

The memorial service for Mrs. Jenkins will be held at 11 o'clock Saturday, March 4th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home beginning at 10 o'clock.
