A memorial service will be held for Marvin Calhoun Goodwin on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 1323 Winyah Drive, Columbia, where he was a life-long member and served on the present Church Council. Seminarian Rusty Kehl will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service.
Mr. Goodwin, who retired after 28 years of service with the S.C. Department of Corrections, died Sunday, April 20, 2014 at age 62. He was the son of Marvin E. and Sarah C. Goodwin. He is survived by his sister, Lucy Ballentine of Lexington; two nephews, three aunts and numerous cousins.
As a scoutmaster of the Boy Scouts for many years, Mr. Goodwin was an inspiration to many young men who became Eagle Scouts and now lead troops themselves. He was a man who stood behind his convictions and will be remembered for sharing his wealth of knowledge and skills with others. An avid hunter, fisherman, and gun expert, Mr. Goodwin's rough exterior sometimes hid his kind heart. He took great pleasure in cooking, barbequing and making fudge for his friends and family as well as keeping his birdfeeder full and assisting his neighbors whenever possible. Throughout years of poor health, Mr. Goodwin maintained a strong, positive outlook on life and created innovative ways to cope with problems brought by his disabilities.
Memorials may be given in his memory to the American Heart Association, 190 Knox Abbott Drive, Cayce, SC 29033, or the American Diabetes Association, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Columbia, SC 29204
