Mary Lou Brodie, 85, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, died Friday, October 28, 2016, in Columbia. Born October 25, 1931, in Greenwood, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Earle Brodie, Sr., M.D. and Mary Lou Long Brodie.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph Earle Brodie, Jr., and James Long Brodie, Sr; as well as her dearest and closest friend, J. Harmann Pieper of Charleston.

Survivors include her brother, William F. Brodie (Frankie); sisters-in-law, Evelyn Brodie, and Hazel Brodie; and 15 nieces and nephews.

At an early age the family moved to Columbia, where she was educated in public schools and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a B. S. Degree, finishing the last two years of nursing at the Medical School of South Carolina in Charleston.

Mary Lou remained in her beloved city of Charleston working at the Medical Hospital of Charleston and the S.C. Department of Health. Retiring at the age of 57, she later moved to Mt. Pleasant as the city grew. She was an avid reader and had a love of classical music and traveling.

She was loved by all her family and was especially close to her late brother, Jim Brodie and his wife, Hazel; and their children, Betsy Hartridge and James Brodie, Jr.
