Mary Jane Gregg Shand, 83, of Columbia, died on Monday, January 22, 2024, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born August 5, 1940, in Staunton, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Leroy Earl Gregg and Flora Johnson Gregg. Mrs. Shand earned her degree in nursing from the University of Richmond and later retired from A.G. Edwards as a registered sales assistant. She was married to Julian Bonham Shand, Jr. for 60 years and they resided in Rome, Georgia from 1969-2000. They relocated to Columbia, South Carolina, where they enjoyed living in closer proximity to family and friends.
Mrs. Shand was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Rome, GA for 30 years. She was also a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in Columbia, where she served on the Altar Guild. Mrs. Shand volunteered her time for many years as a candy striper at Providence Hospital, and was a member of The Assembly and the Wistaria Garden Club.
Survivors include her husband, Julian Bonham Shand, Jr.; sons, Peter Gregg Shand (Jessica) of Columbia, James Bonham Shand of Marietta, GA, and Jonathan Heyward Shand of Atlanta, GA; granddaughters, Grace Bonham Shand of Columbia, and Louisa Heyward Shand of Columbia. She also leaves behind her sister-in-law, Lucy Shand Edmunds and her brother-in-law, Thomas Bryant Edmunds of Columbia; nieces Pride Edmunds Owens and Juliana Edmunds King; and nephew Dr. Thomas Bryant Edmunds, Jr.
The graveside service for Mrs. Shand will be held at 4 o'clock, Tuesday, January 30th, in the Churchyard of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 1100 Sumter St, Columbia, SC 29201.
