Mary Ann Hill Smarr passed away on May 6, 2016 in Greenville, S.C. at the age of 77.
She is survived by her sons, William Craig Smarr and wife, Jill Polatty Smarr, of Gastonia, NC and Eric McMurray Smarr and wife, Robyn Denise Smarr, of Simpsonville, SC; grandchildren, William Blake Smarr, Susan Lyn Smarr, Landon Lea Smarr, and Luke McMurray Smarr; and a sister, Peg Hill Bobotis of Greenville, SC. She is preceded in death by her parents, William Lawrence Hill, Jr. and Margaret Smith Hill.
Mary Ann was born on March 3, 1939 in Sharon, S.C. She graduated from Winthrop in 1961 with a BS degree. Mary Ann then accepted a position on the faculty at Clemson University. She later completed a Masters in Library Science from USC in 1985. Throughout her life she shared her passion for learning, academic education, and reading with both children and adults. She was a devout follower of Jesus Christ and loved the Lord with all her heart. She attended First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, S.C.
A memorial service, officiated by The Rev. L. Craig Wilkes, will be held at 11 o'clock, Saturday, May 14th at First Presbyterian Church, Smith Chapel, 1420 Washington St., Columbia. A greeting will follow in the Atrium of Jackson Hall. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mary Ann's life.
