Mary Sheila Thornton Mangum, 85, of Blythewood, died Monday, June 2, 2014. Born January 23, 1929, in Winnsboro, SC, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Earl Thornton and Mary Ellen "Susie" Watson Thornton. A graduate of Columbia High School, Mary and her husband, Juddy, were the owners and operators of Mid-Carolina Travel Tours for over 20 years. She really enjoyed working with her husband, and being the "Lady in Charge." They enjoyed travelling all over the US and making many friends along the way. She also loved time with her family. Mary was a member of Killian Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, H.L. "Juddy" Mangum of Blythewood; daughter Marilyn Panarello (Frank) of Lexington; son, Dennis Mangum (Lea) of Lexington; grandchildren, Ronald Mangum, Jr. (Brandy); Kara, Christopher, Joshua Mangum, Paul Perry (Amanda), Jason Perry (Anna), Robert Mangum, Emily Mangum, Joseph Panarello (LeeAnn) Ashley Panarello Gilbert (Kyle), Matthew Panarello (Lauren); great grandchildren, Annabel Panarello, Trenton Gilbert, Adelyn Panarello, Ashlyn Gilbert, Jackson Mangum, Brittney Watts, Liam Perry, Alanna and Jaimey Mangum; and sister, Doris Paul (A.T.) of Columbia. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her son, Ronald Wayne Mangum, Sr.; and siblings, Wallace Thornton, Sr., Rae Hulst, Hubert Thornton, Charlotte "Sally" Satcher and Donald Thorton, Sr.
The funeral service for Mrs. Mangum will be held 1 o'clock, Thursday, June 5th, at Killian Baptist Church, with The Rev. Richard A. Humphries and The Rev. Vickie Powell officiating. Burial will follow at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Mangum will be placed in the church at noon. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock, Wednesday evening, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia.
