Mary Givens Newton, 98, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, May 13, 2023. Born February 15, 1925, in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Boyd and Mildred Cleo Byrd Givens. She retired in 1986 after a career that spanned nearly three decades with the federal government. Mrs. Newton was a member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church and one of her favorite hobbies was reading.

Survivors include her daughters, Judy Newton Hall and Barbara A. Newton, as well as her granddaughter, Melissa A. Hall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Sidney E. Newton; stepmother, Rosalie Dixon Givens, and her brothers, Warren T. Givens and Eugene Boyd Givens.

The graveside service for Mrs. Newton will be held at 11 o'clock, Friday, May 19th at Bush River Memorial Gardens, 5400 Bush River Rd, Columbia, SC 29212. The family will briefly greet friends at the conclusion of the service. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
