Matthew Brackin Edens

The world has lost an infectious, caring soul, a true legend, and one of the kindest, funniest, sweetest people to ever walk the planet. Matthew Brackin Edens, 35, passed away on September 5, 2026. He lived a life of ultimate freedom, seeing more and doing more in his time on Earth than most could ever dream of. Known affectionately to many as the "King of the Oogles," Matthew carved out a life completely on his own terms, leaving an undeniable mark on everyone he met.

His passion for adventure took him across the globe. Matthew traveled the world, hopped trains, and found his peace outdoors—whether he was camping, spending days by the river, or riding his bike. But as much as he loved the open road, he loved people more. He possessed a rare, beautiful empathy, frequently dedicating his time to cooking and serving food to the homeless, ensuring that those who had the least were treated with dignity and warmth.

Music was the heartbeat of his journey. Working with his label, Flail Records, Matthew's incredible talent resonated far and wide, ultimately taking his music and Yes Ma’am, all the way to the number one spot on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart. Through his art, he captured the raw, beautiful essence of the life he lived.

Ding, Ding, Boom, Boom!

Matthew leaves behind a massive network of friends who loved him fiercely, including his beloved Muddy Roots family. We know he loved us all.

He is survived by his loving parents, Greg and Brenda Edens; his brother, Alex Edens (Michaela); and his cherished nephew, Xander Edens. He also leaves behind his aunts, Carol Ard, Peggy Hope (Randy), Christa Brackin, and Robin Spires (Rick); his uncle, Al Edens; and his cousins, Glenn Brackin, Andrew Brackin, Cal Brackin, Zyon Brackin, Kevin Ard, Bryan Ard, Randy Hope, Lee Hope, Roman Robertson, Lake Lindler and Kylie Robertson alongside his very special friend Otter Celeste and countless friends who became family along the way.

Though he has moved on to his next great journey, Matthew's memory lives on in every train whistle, every campfire, and every melody. Rest easy, Matthew.

Celebration of life will be held at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, on September 19th at 11:00 am with viewing starting at 10:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial donations be made to a local Community Food bank or a Homeless Shelter of your choice.
