Michael Lee Barton, 73, of Columbia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. Born in Charleston, SC, on August 23, 1952, he was a son of the late Aubrey Lee Barton and Clara Imogene Julian Barton.

Michael was a 1970 graduate of North Charleston High School, and went on to the Baptist College of Charleston where he graduated in 1974. Ten years later he answered God's call by going to seminary and completed a Masters of Education degree. He and his wife, Debbie, moved to Tampa, Florida in 1989 and remained in Florida until 2024. Michael taught High School English, Literature, and Bible at Grace Christian School for 32 years.

Michael loved teaching. He loved using God's word, life experiences, and humor to reach the next generation. He lead his students by example, never assigned an assignment that he didn't complete himself, he was always willing to listen, give a shoulder to cry on, and was their biggest cheerleader. These actions made an impact on many students for generations to come.

He loved spending time with his family, watching sports, exploring history, specially World War II (which his dad fought in). He enjoyed these things all best accompanied with a daily bowl of ice cream.

Survivors include his wife, Debra Stafford Barton; daughter, Aixa Barton, of Columbia; sisters, Deborah Barton Spell (Joey) and Rosie Barton Stanley (Marshall) along with many nieces and nephews.

The memorial service for Mr. Barton will be held at 1 o'clock, Monday, November 10th, in the Chapel of Shandon Baptist Church, with Pastors Daniel Schrall and Joey Huggins officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Chapel. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
