Michael Jan Willem VanRees, 48, of Columbia, passed away on Saturday, September 17, 2022. Born on November 14, 1973, in Busan, Korea, he was the son of Raymond Jan Willem VanRees and So Sun Cha VanRees. Michael was a proud veteran of the US Navy.

Michael was a true comedian and enjoyed making others laugh. Prior to his illness, Michael loved working in the yard and being outdoors. Michael was a skilled painter and owner of his own paint company. Although, his greatest passion in life was being a father to his two children.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his daughter, Taylor Micah VanRees; son, Connor Michael VanRees; sister, Eva VanRees Castles (Dane); nieces, Emma Louise Castles and Margaret Rees Castles.

A graveside service for Mr. VanRees will be held at 11 o'clock, on Thursday, September 29th, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
