Mildred Smith Athanasoff, 93, widow of Joseph Athanasoff, died Saturday, October 18, 2014 at her home. Born in Blythewood, she was a daughter of the late John Ulysses Smith and Gussie Branham Smith. Mrs. Athanasoff was a member of Belmont Baptist Church, and she served as a volunteer at the Brian Center Nursing Home on Forest Drive for more than 25 years.

Mrs. Athanasoff is survived by her nephews, Gerald B. White, and Clarence Timme, Sr. (Brenda); nieces, Lois Timme, and Erma Aluag; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and by her honorary sister, Opal Wright.

The funeral service for Mrs. Athanasoff will be held 3 o'clock, Thursday, October 23rd at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia, with interment to follow in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery. Rev. Brenda Kneece will officiate. The family will receive friends, prior to the service, at the funeral home beginning at 2 o'clock.
