Mildred Pauline "Polly" Boykin Turner, 93, of Columbia, died Thursday, April 24, 2014 at The Heritage at Lowman. Mrs. Turner was a native of Weaverville, NC and the daughter of the late Robert H. and Cartie H. Boykin.
She lived her adult life in the Columbia area, and graduated from Columbia High School. She went on to attend Columbia College. She worked for Southern Bell, Southern Railroad and retired from South Carolina General Tele-communications as the head operator. A member of Ashland United Methodist Church, Polly loved family and friends, as well as playing card games, bridge and bingo.
Survivors include her son, Paul M. "Buster" Turner, Jr. and his wife, Jane Miller Turner; grandson, Paul M. Turner III and his wife, Kathy Pensmith Turner; great-grandchildren, Andrew Turner and his wife, Desiree, Amanda and Stephanie Turner and Kelly Pensmith; and many nephews and nieces. In addition to her parents, Polly was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Monroe Turner; siblings, Marjorie Krebs, Hazel Moilanen and Robert H. Boykin, Jr.; and grandson, Robert Crawford Turner.
The funeral service for Mrs. Turner will be held at 10 o'clock, Monday, April 28th at Ashland United Methodist Church, with The Rev. Jim Nates officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 3 until 5 o'clock, Sunday afteroon, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia. The family suggests memorials be made to The American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210
The family would like to thank Mrs. Turner's physician, Dr. Elizabeth Patrick Label, and the employees and staff of the Heritage at Lowman and Lutheran Hospice for their compassion and love.
