MSG Charles Robert Rando, US Army (Ret), 92, of Columbia, died September 22, 2022. Born in Boston, MA on December 26, 1929, he was the son of the late Charles Hood and Josephine Rando and married to Jane Carol Worthy Rando.
Charles served his country in the US Army in Occupied Germany at the end of WWII, Korean Conflict, and two tours in Vietnam. He received the Purple Heart in Korea and the Bronze Star in Vietnam. During his second tour in Vietnam, he served with the Army Americal 23rd Infantry Division alongside then Major Colin Powell and survived a helicopter crash during his tour. During his later years he enjoyed supporting causes for the United States Armed Forces and was active in the Sons of Italy.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Toni Willis (Tim) of Nashville, TN, Teri Rando of Columbia, SC, Tami Melder (Van) of Myrtle Beach, SC; stepchildren, Jack Gregory (Anne) of Pawleys Island, SC and William Gregory of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Regan Caughman, Quinton Rando, Mechelen Melder, Lindsey Wheeler (Stephen), Michael Gregory, Ben Leonhardt (Danielle), Caroline Gregory, and Lindsay Gregory, Hayden Gregory; four great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild.
The Family would like to thank the Staff of White Oak Manor for the care they gave Charles over the last 4 years as he considered them as his extended family.
In light of Hurricane Ian, the service will now be held at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, at 1 o'clock, Friday, September 30th. Burial will be held later in Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
