Nancy Ouida Tompkins Hinson, widow of Edgar Julian Hinson, Jr., died April 24, 2013 at Agape Senior Care, West Columbia, South Carolina. Mrs. Hinson was born October 27, 1918 at Willowanna Lodge in Abney, a community outside Kershaw, South Carolina. She was the only child of Robert Kirkley Tompkins and Marie Willingham Tompkins. She graduated from Limestone College in 1939 and was a member of Chi Delta Phi Sorority. Professionally, Mrs. Hinson taught public school music and private piano lessons. She was also a church musician serving as organist and choir director at Church of Our Savior Episcopal Church in Rock Hill, SC, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Fort Mill, SC and Christ Episcopal Church in Lancaster, SC. Active in other leadership roles in the church, she was Past President of the Episcopal Women of the Church for the Upper Diocese of South Carolina and was a delegate to the National Convention for the Episcopal Church. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Columbia, SC at the time of her death.
Mrs. Hinson is survived by her daughters, Ann Hinson of Indianapolis, Indiana, Rebecca Hinson Lever and her husband, Thomas Edward Lever, Sr. and their son, Thomas Edward Lever, Jr. of Greenville, SC , and their daughter, Katherine Tompkins Lever of New York, NY; Robin Hinson Driggers and her husband, George Thomas "Dick" Driggers, Jr., of Columbia, South Carolina. She was predeceased by her only son, Edgar Julian Hinson, III.
The family wishes to thank the entire staff of Agape Senior Care and Agape Hospice for the personal attention, love and gentle care given to Mrs. Hinson for the last year and a half.
The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Driggers on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., 15 Oakman Court East, Columbia. The funeral will be Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church, 2827 Wheat Street, Columbia, SC, with interment immediately following in the church columbarium. The family will also receive friends at the church immediately following the service.
