Obituary

Nellie G. Brown, 91, of Columbia, died on Tuesday, December 30, 2025. Born on November 20, 1934, in Groveland, Florida, she was a daughter of the late Lester Bryant and Clara Beatty Howard.

Mrs. Brown's life revolved around her faith, family, and friends. She was a homemaker and the matriarch of her family. While her husband honorably served in the US Navy, she diligently managed her home and devoted herself to her family. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren affectionately referred to her as Mamaw and she played an integral role in each of their lives. Mrs. Brown was a member of Jackson Creek Baptist Church until it closed and was a former member of Dentsville Baptist Church for over 50 years, where she served in various roles, including Church Clerk, Sunday School teacher, and nursery attendant. In her spare time, she enjoyed cooking, baking, and crocheting. Mom/Mamaw will be greatly missed. We are thankful for the way she served our family with overwhelming love and kindness, ensuring all who entered her home felt welcomed.

Survivors include her children, Alan Brown (Becky) of Blythewood and Kathy Davis (Bill) of West Columbia; grandchildren, Ashley Mitchke (Nick), Kaitlyn Brown, and Nicholas Brown; great grandchildren, Elizabeth Mitchke and Michelle Mitchke; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years CPO William Arnold Brown, Jr., US Navy (ret.) and her siblings, Floyd Howard, Lester Howard, Amos Howard, and Betty Henderson.

The funeral service for Mrs. Brown will be held at 11 o'clock Thursday, January 8th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. Burial will follow at 12 o'clock at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC 29229.
