Obituary

Nellie H. Roberts, 89, of Columbia, died peacefully, Sunday January 28, 2018, in the presence of her loving husband, LTC James H. Roberts, Jr. (Ret). Born Nellie Louise Hoffman, on February 28, 1928, in Bamberg, SC, she was the daughter of the late Leland C. and Vinelle H. Hoffman.

Nellie was a graduate of Bamberg High School, where she and James were high school sweethearts. Married June 27, 1953, Nellie was a devoted Army officer's wife, mother and homemaker, and traveled the world with her husband and family. Military assignments included state-side tours in New Jersey and Maryland, and foreign assignments in France and Germany. Nellie never forgot her roots, and her southern charm was ever present. She loved cooking low-country dishes, dancing to Shag, tending to her Magnolia trees and gardening. She was an avid golfer and bowler, and was a long-time member of Spring Valley Country Club, the Spring Valley Ladies Golf Association, the Ft. Jackson Officer's Mixed Bowling League, and the Ft. Jackson Ladies Bowling League. Nellie was a devout Christian and was a member of the North Trenholm Baptist Church and the Early Risers Sunday School.

In addition to her husband, Nellie is survived by her children, Rhonda R. (John) Kirk, of Columbia; James R. (Mark Bradford) Roberts, of East New Market, MD, and Richard K. (Mary Ann) Roberts, of Dallas, PA; Grandchildren, Kelli S. (Adam) Carter, Ashley S. (Mark) Lentz, Kathryn M. Roberts and Matthew R. Roberts; and Great Grandchildren Hailey Atkinson, Caleb Carter, and Addison and Ford Lentz. She is also survived by her Sister-in-Law, Betty Hoffman, of Barnwell. Nellie was predeceased by her brothers L. Harold Sandifer, Leland C. Hoffman, Jr., and sister's Mabel S. Folk, Barbara H. Robinson, and Lois H. Best.

Funeral services will be coordinated by Shives Funeral Home, 7600 Trenholm Road, Columbia. Following a private viewing, a public service will be held at 12:00pm Friday, February 2nd, at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia.
