Obituary

The funeral service for Patricia "Patsy" Nungezer Stone, 89, will be held Sunday, March 17, 2024, at 3:30 o'clock at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2 until 3:30 o'clock. A graveside service and burial will follow on Monday, March 18 at Elmwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Stone was born on March 17, 1934 in Columbia, SC. She was a daughter of the late Robert DuPont and the late Mary Cooper Nungezer. Patsy graduated from Eau Claire High School, Winthrop College, and the University of South Carolina. After graduation, she immediately used her biology degree working for the SC Health Department Laboratory until 1963. Mrs. Patsy and Donald were married at Park Street Baptist Church in 1959 and enjoyed 52 years together until his death in 2011. As secretary at Bates School from 1972 until its closing in 1980, Mrs. Patsy loved her Bates students, attended reunions when possible and enjoyed news of them from Facebook. Later, with the SC Department of Public Safety, Highway Patrol Training, she found a new niche and developed more close friendships until she retired in 1999. She loved attending Trooper graduations when possible.

A member of Park Street Baptist Church since an early age, Patsy was always singing in the choir and ensembles, and was a member of the Sunday Schools. She was very active in the Missions organizations at both the Church and the Association level. She wrote a weekly column in the church newsletter and occasionally added a touch of fun with the antics of their beloved dogs, Teddy, Purple and later Marley. Patsy and Donald thrived on Clemson football, joining IPTAY in 1970, with seats on the same row for over 40 years. Attached to the seats in the early 70's, was a sticker "The Stones Sit Here" which stayed for years. In 2019 the outline of that sticker was still visible on the aluminum! Later, as Donald preferred the safety and comfort of home, Patsy provided the tickets while Patti drove to the games. Patsy wore Patti's treasured Clemson University Chorus jacket to stay warm and everyone thought she was the graduate and her daughter kindly brought her to the games. Imagine their surprise at being mom's tickets and daughter's jacket! She continued to watch her beloved Tigers play on television and kept up on all the fun news.

In her later years she had wonderful caregivers, Pong Sun Beaudry, employer Bennie Killingsworth and his staff, the late Harry Mae Priester, Georgia Gilmore, Sharon Graham-Rogers, Margaret and others who allowed Patsy to be able to stay home as long as possible. The family is also grateful for the care and love from all the staff at Colonial Gardens Special Care Alzheimer Unit in West Columbia.

In addition to her parents and husband, Patsy is preceded in death by sister Carolyn Land, sister-in-law, Betty Stone and three brothers-in-law George Welch Eleazer, Jr., Hutchinson Carns, and James Land. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Patti Stone and Bobby Saylors of Lugoff; sister-in-law, Aldaray Carns; brother-in-law, Harvey Stone; nieces, Cary (Ray) White, Cheryl (Robert) Wylie and Pam (Lee) Roddey; nephews, Danny (Frances) Carns, Phil (Chrissy) Carns, Barry (Cindy) Stone, Brent (Carmen) Stone, and Brian (Melissa) Stone; great nieces, Kathryn (David) Day and Caroline (Taylor) Kearns; cousin, Georgianna (Don) Dukes; second cousins, Brian (Elizabeth) Dukes and Anna (Ben) Grusin; and extended family.

The family would also like to thank Shives Funeral home for their support and care with the planning of these events now and over the years.
