Obituary

Patrick Joseph Hickey, 49, of Columbia, died on Friday, January 3, 2025. Born in Aiken, SC, on December 18, 1975, he was a son of Howard McKay Hickey and Keith Cameron Richardson. Patrick was a graduate of Avon Old Farms School in Connecticut where he played Lacrosse and was an enthusiastic participant in Chorale. He attended the College of Charleston and then served in the United States Navy as an electronics specialist for the P3 Orion Sub-chaser. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.

Patrick was in the maritime industry operating ocean going tugboats for more than 20 years. Most recently, he was employed by Vane Brothers as a Tugboat Captain on the Philadelphia, a twin screw tug, in the New York Harbor where he was known for being able to skillfully navigate the East River and harbors of the northeast.

Because his work took him away from his family for weeks at a time, he treasured his moments at home. He reveled in teaching his kids some of life's basic skills such as riding a bike, baiting a hook, making a good, hot fire, and grilling a steak.

Patrick was jolly and quick witted to say the least and always had a great comeback ready.

In addition to his parents, survivors include his wife, Melissa Dacamara Hickey; son, Patrick Joseph Hickey, Jr.; daughter, Edythe Elizabeth Hickey; step-mother, Linda Charles Hickey; mother-in-law, Kathleen Dacamara; sister, Lisa Hickey Vipperman (Jonathan); brothers, Gordon McKay Hickey (Alison) and Christopher Thaddeus Hickey; nieces and nephew, Cameron Elizabeth Vipperman, Grace McKay Vipperman, Louise King Vipperman, Blake McKay Hickey; as well as uncle, John Witherspoon Richardson; aunt, Mellie Hickey Nelson (Paul); and cousin, Gunnar Howard Linden Nelson.

The service for Patrick will be held at 12 o'clock, Wednesday, January 8th, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 1100 Sumter Street, Columbia, SC. A burial will follow the service in the churchyard after which the family will receive friends in Satterlee Hall. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
