Paul Henry Huggins, 72, of Columbia, husband of Dorothy Kinghorn Huggins, passed away on August 24, 2016 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Mr. Huggins was born in Leavenworth, KS on November 21, 1943 to the late Nadine Hanna Huggins and Elmer Paul Huggins. He attended Dreher High School where he developed a lifelong love for track and running. He participated in numerous marathons, including the Boston Marathon. Mr. Huggins graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BS degree in accounting. He also earned a certification in financial planning from Midlands Technical College.
Mr. Huggins served in the US Army and was stationed at Fort Campbell, KY and South Korea. He worked his way through USC as a part time letter carrier, beginning in 1966. Mr. Huggins continued as a full time carrier until his retirement in 1998. He was instrumental in the development of a national training program for postal employees. Mr. Huggins served as treasurer of the National Association of Letter Carriers in Columbia for 16 years.
He "married Dorothy, Jay and Johanna Fennell" November of 1985, and enjoyed a rich family life as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He especially enjoyed being "Grandaddy," playing on the floor with his grandchildren.
Mr. Huggins was a long time member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church and the Serving Our Savior Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his loving wife; son, Jay Fennell (Erin) of Nolensville, TN; and daughter, Johanna (Jonathan) Chapman of Johnson City, TN. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Jack, Avery and Mills Fennell, and Abigail and Rachel Chapman. Also surviving is his sister, Sylvia Huggins Pomerleau of Chicago and nephews, Paul Pomerleau of Chicago and Mark Pomerleau of Helena, MT.
The family is grateful for the loving care provided by Harbor Chase Memory Center in Irmo.
A memorial celebration of life will be held at Riverland Hills Baptist Church in Irmo on Saturday, August 27th at 11 o'clock. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Burial will be at a later time in the Baptist Church of Beaufort Cemetery. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
