Penelope Osborne Sumter, 62, of Swansea, died Thursday, March 12, 2015. Born January 31, 1953 in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Mark Rayburn and Bridget Palmer Osborne. Penelope had a master's degree in early childhood education and spent much of her career teaching kindergarten.

Survivors include her son, Jesse (Corene) Hawkins of Lexington; sister, Elizabeth (Malcolm) Johnston of Columbia; nieces, Penny Jo (Robert) Newkirk of Harlem, GA, Joanna (Ryan) Ouderkirk of Manila, Philippines, Sydney (Michael) Hammer of Columbia; seven great-nieces and nephews.

Services will be private. Memorials may be made to the Bridget Osborne Scholarship Fund, C/O Irmo High School, 6671 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC 29212. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
