Petty Officer William David Rowell, US Navy (Ret.), 90, of Columbia, died Wednesday, July 12, 2023. Born October 21, 1932, in Trio, South Carolina, he was a son of the late Horace Lorace Rowell and Imogene Delia Payne Rowell. Bill was educated in Williamsburg County, South Carolina schools and attended Olympia High School following his move to Columbia as a teenager. He enlisted in the US Navy and honorably served his country during the Korean War and Vietnam War. Bill would retire from the US Navy following more than 30 years of active and reserve duty. Following his distinguished military career, he would return to the civilian workforce where he was employed for many years by the Nazareth Village Diocesan Retirement Home and CertainTeed. Bill had a great love for the outdoors. He especially loved his fishing trips with friends to the Delaware Bay or Jersey Shore and also caring for his lawn and garden.
Survivors include his sister, Betty Ann Rowell Whittle of Columbia; nephews, James C. Whittle (Janet) and Berley Crosby (Carol); niece, Gloria Ann Whittle Miller (Lindsay), as well as many great nieces, nephews, and other extended family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two wives, Mary Anna Parke Rowell and Ann T. Burns Rowell; sister, Belva Jean Rowell Crosby; brothers-in-law, Calvin Whittle and Hughy Crosby, and nephew, Tommy Crosby.
A private graveside service will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
