Rachel Sutherland Cole, 97, of Columbia, died Sunday, August 27, 2017 at her home. Born on August 18, 1920 in Abbeville, SC, she was a daughter of the late Jesse Lee and Myrtle Napier Sutherland. Mrs. Cole was member of Main Street United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She attended Columbia College, State Hospital School of Nursing, Roper Hospital School of Nursing, as well as Columbia Commercial College. Mrs. Cole worked as a Registered Nurse with Providence Hospital, American Red Cross, Moncrief Army Hospital at Ft. Jackson, and was the co-owner of Custom Music of South Carolina.

She is survived by her loving husband of 75 years, John Wesley Cole, Jr; nephew, Daniel DA'melio; nieces, Kay Holland and Rebecca McConnell; and sister-in-law, Catherine Holland.

A funeral service for Mrs. Cole will be held 12 o'clock, Wednesday, August 30th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. Burial will follow the service at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service, beginning at 11 o'clock.
