Rachel Anne Cubbage Smith, 81, of West Columbia, died on Sunday, June 10, 2012. Born in Sumter County, SC on August 29, 1930, she was a daughter of the late Arthur Montgomery Cubbage and Rachel Ridgeway Cubbage.

Mrs. Smith, the valedictorian of the 1947 class at Hillcrest High School, was also a two time honor graduate from the Midland Technical College. She retired from the Employment Security Commission in 1999 after twenty-one years of service. Mrs. Smith was a member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church, but since moving to West Columbia in the mid 80's she had attended Northside Baptist Church for nearly thirty years.

Survivors include her daughters, Jackie (Sammy) Poole, of Sumter, SC, Virginia "Ginger" (Thomas) Kirton of West Columbia; sons, Luther "Luke" J. Smith, Jr., of West Columbia, William "Bill" (Claudia) Smith of Lexington, and Charlie Smith of Spartanburg; grandchildren, Angie Snow, Sam Poole, Vivian Poole, Zach Kirton, Sarah Kirton, Megan Kirton, and Tiffany Deming; along with eight great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Richard Arthur Smith, and was the last of eleven brothers and sisters.

The funeral for Mrs. Smith will be held 11 o'clock Wednesday, June 13th at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10 o'clock. Burial will follow at Greenhaven Preserve in Eastover. Mrs. Smith's grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
