Ralph Melvin "Mel" Keogh, Jr., 64, of Columbia, died Thursday, February 2, 2017. Born in Walterboro, the first of three children, to the late Ralph Keogh, Sr. and Emily Guilford Keogh. After high school, Ralph served in the US Air Force. He was a wonderful and unique human being. From his love of the Beatles to Garth Brooks, music was a significant part of Mel. The strumming of his personal guitar—which he taught himself—to playing around on the sound board at North Trenholm Baptist Church, he always welcomed the chance to be around music. Being a member of Shandon Baptist Church, The Singing Christmas Tree allowed Mel to utilize his creative side by programming lights to the music. Whatever he got himself into, he became deeply involved. Being a devoted husband and father, he involved himself in his family's lives: from coaching his kids in soccer to assisting in numerous band trips, and supporting his wife in her participation in the hand bell choir. He was a faithful employee who worked long hours to provide for his family. Quick to lend a helping hand, whether at work or to a neighbor, he enjoyed being around people. With his presence, he brought along companionship to many people whether he knew them or a complete stranger. His welcoming spirit and his love for talking were a few of the traits people grew fond of. Along with being an avid pet lover, and an enthusiastic gardener, he leaves behind a little of himself everywhere. Ralph Melvin Keogh, Jr. leaves behind his wife of almost 40 years of marriage, Rachel; a loving daughter and her family, Alissa; a son to carry on the family name, Nathan; and a daughter who has gone on before him, and whose spirit left a sweet and precious imprint on our lives, Cassie. He is also survived by his sisters, Susan Blackwood and Lori Anderson. Last but not least, he leaves behind his buddy, Scooby Doo—a golden retriever, and three cats—Angel, Pumpkin, and Rascal. He will be greatly missed.
A service will be held 12 o'clock, Friday, February 10th, at Shandon Baptist Church. Burial will follow the service in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock, Thursday evening at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia.
