Richard Alfred Chamberlain, Jr. passed away at his home in early June 2025. He was 73 years old. His outgoing nature and charming wit will be missed by all who knew him.
Richard was born on September 30, 1951 to Marjorie and Dick Chamberlain of North Carolina. He graduated from Shelby High School and went on to earn a degree from Wake Forest University in 1972. Over the years, he pursued a diverse and meaningful career: he worked in accident investigation, managed a test preparation program for Kaplan, and later taught high school. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Shelby.
Richard had a deep love for travel and made it a priority to explore new places several times a year. He was also a lifelong lover of music and books, always ready to recommend a good read. A highlight of his sharp mind and quick recall, Richard was a proud Jeopardy gameshow champion, a reflection of his love for learning and natural curiosity about the world.
He is survived by Emily and Stephen McCrae of Columbia, SC; Madison Rast and Chrysyn Harp of Philadelphia, PA; and Wesley and Sara Rast of Philadelphia, PA. He is also survived by grandchildren Madeline and Julie McCrae; and by his sisters Anne Richards of Spring City, TN; Pat Thorpe of Richmond, VA; Linda Migioia of Summerville, SC; and Gladys Hernandez of Forest City, NC.
He was predeceased by his wife, Kay Phillips Rast.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 28th at 10:00 AM at First Baptist Church in Shelby, NC. All are welcome to join us in honoring and remembering Richard. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
