Dr. Richard Jordan Weymouth's Obituary

Dr. Richard Jordan Weymouth, of Columbia, was born on July 19, 1928, passed from this life at his home surrounded by family and loved ones on Saturday, September 8, 2012.
Dr. Weymouth, a skilled and compassionate physician, received his PhD from the University of Michigan in 1955 and his medical doctorate from Marquette University in 1963. A gifted educator, he was an instructor at the University of Miami from 1955-1959, and served as a Professor of Medical Education, teaching in the Anatomy Department at the Medical College of Virginia from 1964-1975.

An invaluable leader, Dr. Weymouth came to South Carolina in 1975 to assist in the establishment of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, where he was a professor and Chairman of the Department of Anatomy, Assistant Dean for Admissions, and Student Affairs and Curriculum, before retiring in 1992. The highlight of his career was as a Fulbright professor at Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey from 1985-1986. Dr. Weymouth devoted his life to working with medical students, and was awarded Teacher of Year at the Medical College of Virginia for the years 1970-1972.

Dr. Weymouth was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, and was formerly a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He was also active in his neighborhood of Turkey Pointe Circle.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Beverly Weymouth; daughter, Stacey Jordan Rowlette of Lexington; grandson, Matthew Jordan Rowlette of Gilbert; sister, Mary Stevens of Orrington, Maine; sister-in-law, Kay Wilhelm; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Dr. Weymouth will be held at 10:30 o'clock, Wednesday, September 12th, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 3909 Forest Drive, Columbia, with The Rev. Paul Wollner and The Rev. Kris Litman-Koon officiating. Dr. Reuben Mayer, MD, will offer a reflection. The family will greet friends prior to the service beginning at 9:30 o'clock.

Memorials may be made to The Boy Scouts of America, 715 Betsy Dr., Ste. B6, Columbia, 29210, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, or to a charity of your choice.
