Robert Clayton Murrell, Sr. (Clay), 47, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away on June 15, 2014 after a valiant battle with cancer.

The funeral service will be held at two o'clock on Wednesday, June 18th at Northeast Presbyterian Church, 601 Polo Road, Columbia, with The Rev. Dr. George Crow III officiating. Visitation will precede the ceremony at one o'clock in the church atrium. Burial will follow the funeral in the church cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Shives Funeral Home.

Clay was born in Columbia, SC in 1966 to Jane H. Murrell and the late William H. Murrell. He graduated from A.C. Flora High School and continued on to receive both a Bachelor of Science degree, and a Masters degree in Public Health from The University of South Carolina.

Clay served as the Director of Physician Relations and Hospitalists Services for KershawHealth in Camden, SC where he was recently chosen as a recipient of the Thoroughbred award. He enjoyed spending time with his family, completing crossword puzzles in ink, enjoying all of the culture Columbia has to offer, and being an avid Gamecock fan. He was also actively involved in the elementary Promiseland Sunday School classes of Northeast Presbyterian Church for many years.

Clay is survived by his loving wife, Genie; his children, Rob Murrell, Drew and Allison Murrell, and Kate Murrell; mother, Jane H. Murrell; brother, Bentley Murrell and family; and sister, Holly McPherson and family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Northeast Presbyterian Church; Relay For Life, 128 Stonemark Ln, Columbia, SC 29210; and to the Mission of Hope: Haiti, PO Box 171500, Austin, TX 78717-1500. Clay's family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of South Carolina Oncology Associates (SCOA) and Tri-County Hospice.
