Robert L. "Bob" Hooks, 81, of Lake Murray, SC died Sunday, August 21, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Horry County, SC he was the eldest son of the late Mamie Hooks Coates.
Robert retired from Westinghouse Electric Company in 2000 after 35 years of service. He served in the United States Army, was member of Jamil Shrine Temple and Denstville Masonic Lodge #398.
After losing his beloved wife, Jo Ann of 43 years in 2002, Robert gave his life to the Lord and was baptized. He remained an active member of his church until he was no longer able to attend. In his final days, he often described to his family and visitors the splendor that awaited him in heaven.
Robert was an avid fisherman and loved to talk about "the one that got away". Prior to his illness, he could be found "piddling" in his yard or sitting in his swing watching the sunset over the lake. He loved to share memories of his children, especially his cherished son, "Bobby," who passed away at the age of four.
Robert is survived by his daughter, Leighann Hooks and her fiancé, Holmes P. "Trace" Haselden, III, of Irmo; special friend, Carol Hurt of West Columbia; brothers, Dayton Coates (Glenda) of Conway and Vernon Hooks (Agnes) of Aynor; sisters, Evelyn Johnson (David) of Goose.Creek, Christine Greenawalt (Les) of Charleston, Paula Smith and Pearl Lucas of CT. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jo Ann Brock Hooks; son, Robert Lee Hooks, Jr.; and sisters, Betty Coates and Kathryn Coates.
The service for Mr. Hooks will be held 10 o'clock, Wednesday, August 24th at Gantt Street Baptist Church, 2121 Gantt St, Cayce, SC, 29033. Burial will follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 23rd from 5 until 7 o'clock at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia.
