Robert D. Murphy, 84, of Columbia, died Saturday, June 18, 2016. Born October 16, 1931, in Richmond, Virginia, he was the son of the late Bessie Taylor and Delphin Delmous Murphy. Mr. Murphy was a licensed insurance agent, a Life Sponsor of Ducks Unlimited, and was owner of Millcreek Sporting Clays. He was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church, and served on the East Richland Public Service Commission of which he was chairman from 1984 until 1992.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Christine Woods Murphy; daughter, Cindy Murphy Driscoll (Larry) of DeRidder, LA; son, Robert Michael Murphy (Alison) of Mt. Pleasant; two grandchildren, Matt and Nikki Murphy; sisters, Doris Murphy Garber, of Columbia and Betty Murphy Adams (Ned) of Charleston.
The service for Mr. Murphy will be held 12 o'clock, Thursday, June 23rd at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, with The Rev. Dr. James C. Adams officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 Wednesday evening at the funeral home. A private interment will be held at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery.
