Robert Wesley Sampson, 92, passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2023. Born on March 1, 1931, in McCreary County, KY, he was the son of the late Sanford Sampson and Emery Spradlin Sampson. Robert was the loving husband of Beatrice Virginia Sampson.
He saw combat in Korea where he received a Purple Heart. He served as a Corpsman on several submarines and aircraft carriers. While aboard the aircraft carrier Essex, he helped recover the crew of the successful Apollo 7 mission
Robert will always be remembered as a quiet, strong, and humble man by all who knew him. His love for his family was unmatched and unwavering. He loved nothing more than spending time with his children and grandchildren and teaching them the lessons of life.
Robert is survived by his wife, Beatrice Virginia Sampson; children, Teresa Pietras (David), Cathrine Peters (Cal); grandchildren, Jared Pietras (Donna), Kenna Hubai (Paul), Steven Pietras (Deirdre); granddaughter in law Trish Lawton; great grandchildren, Ryan Lawton, Caden Lawton, Aiden Lawton, Lucy Lawton, Freya Pietras, Wyatt Pietras, Addison Pietras, and Weston Pietras. In addition to his parents, Robert is predeceased by his grandson, Garrett Lawton, and many loving siblings.
A private memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the Sampson family.
