Robert Lawrence Shober, 89, of Lancaster, died on Monday, March 9, 2026. Born in Chester, Pennsylvania, on December 12, 1936, he was a son of the late Samuel Shober and Irma Clark Shober.
He proudly served his country in the United States Navy for over 26 years, enlisting in 1954 and retiring as a Master Chief Fire Control Technician (FTCM, E-9) in the submarine service. His career spanned surface destroyers like the USS Massey early on, then transitioned to nuclear-powered submarines, including the USS Lewis and Clark (SSBN-644) and USS George Bancroft (SSBN-643). He earned six Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, and other honors. Following his honorable transfer to the Fleet Reserve in 1980, he moved to Lancaster SC and was FBO at Lancaster County Airport as an AMP and held a commercial pilots license for Single Engine Land and Sea, Multi Engine Land Aircraft and Rotor-Craft Helicopter. He also, put his HAM License to work volunteering for the American Red Cross handling communications for 33 years.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Shober
Survivors include his son, Robert L. Shober Jr. (Pamela); his brother Walter Shober; Emily and Rebecca Shober.
The graveside service for Mr. Shober will be held at 1 o'clock, Tuesday, March 17th, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
