Ronald Leo Gordon, 86, passed away on August 22, 2022 after a brief illness. Ron was born April 20, 1936 in Arcadia, Kaufman County, Texas, to Charles Wesley Gordon and Mabel Jones Gordon.
He was a 1954 graduate of Mabank High School (Mabank, TX) where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball and was a member of Future Farmers of America. He graduated from North Texas State College (Denton, TX), in 1958, with a degree in mathematics and an Air Force ROTC Commission. He served as an officer in the US Air Force for 11 years, stationed in Texas, Turkey, South Carolina, Germany, and Okinawa.
In 1970, he began his career at SC Employment Security Commission (now SCDEW). He was a 1996 graduate of the SC State Budget and Control Board Executive Institute, retiring from the Agency in 1999 as the Data Processing Administrator. He was a loyal member of Bethel United Methodist Church, the Holroyd Sunday School Class, Men's Club, and served in numerous leadership positions on Church Council.
Ron was devoted to his family, church and country. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lucy Crumpton Gordon, daughter Julia Margaret Gordon (Spartanburg, SC), son Ronald Crumpton Gordon (Columbia, SC), sister-in-law Donna D. Gordon (Prairieville, TX), several nieces, nephews, and adored cousins and their families in Texas. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Kendall E. Gordon.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, August 27 at Sumter Cemetery (Sumter, SC) at 11:00 AM followed by a Celebration of Life at 3:00 PM at Bethel United Methodist Church (Columbia, SC), the Rev. Julie Belman officiating. The family will receive friends in the Pool Activities Building following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Bethel UMC, 4600 Daniel Drive, Columbia, SC 29206 or a charity of one's choice.
