Roy Arthur Gooding, 68, of Columbia, died Saturday, November 12, 2016. Born in Columbia on May 22, 1948, he was a son of the late Calvin B. and Madge Watts Gooding. Roy was a member of Jackson Creek Baptist Church for over 50 years, where he served on several committees. He loved Southern Gospel music and was a sound board volunteer at church. Roy loved the sport of bowling, and was a member of the Greater Columbia Bowling Association, and former member of the Forest Acres-Dentsville Jaycee's. He was a loveable person who never met a stranger, and he will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
He attended Andrew Jackson Vocational Rehabilitation School and graduated from Dentsville High School. He worked at Midlands Center and Crafts Farrow Hospital, retiring after 14 years.
Surviving is his brother, Calvin A. "Al" Gooding; niece, Brittany A. Gooding of Charleston and her mother, JoAnn S. Gooding of Camden.
The service for Mr. Gooding will be held 2 o'clock Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, with the Rev. John Mower officiating. Burial will follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 o'clock, and they request that all who attend the service wear Gamecock attire. This would put a smile on Roy's face. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the staff at White Oak Manor of Columbia for their care of Roy for the past six years.
