Obituary

Roy H. Michaux Jr passed away Oct 11 from cardiac arrest in Columbia, SC. Roy was born in Greensboro to the late Avis Inez Michaux and Roy H. Michaux Sr. The first in his family to graduate from college, Roy earned a business degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1962 and a JD from the UNC School of Law in 1965. While in college, he met his wife of 58 years, Beverly Bunn. His career began in Durham, NC where they made lifelong friends. In 1974 he joined a Charlotte firm that would become Perry, Patrick, Farmer and Michaux.

It's difficult to describe a man so full of life. His fun-loving spirit was infectious, and his daughters were proud to introduce him to their friends and even allowed him to chaperone their ski trips. A lifelong Tar Heel, Roy couldn't watch a game quietly, even after the final buzzer, rehashing all the questionable calls and coaching decisions. Roy and Beverly loved their two daughters, but the real favorites were their grandsons. As the boys came of age, Roy was again an enthusiastic spectator, sometimes getting especially loud for a guy who got cut from Little League.

At 84, Roy still practiced law even though his family thought he was crazy. Throughout his busy career he developed many friendships, joined numerous organizations, and acquired too many accolades to list.

Only when he could not walk 18 holes, did Roy agree to undergo knee replacements. Cherishing weekends with his golf buddies, he entertained them with terrible jokes.

Always living at full speed ahead, his life drastically changed when Beverly passed away in 2020. Though still social and always busy, there was a profound emptiness and less bounce in his step.

Roy met Kay who gave him a second chance with love. The twinkle in his eye resumed, and as Kay became part of the family, Roy's circle of friends grew. Unfortunately, their time together was brief, but it was truly special.

Roy is survived by his loving wife (Kay McBryde), daughters Susan Dalton (Charles), Alice Michaux (Betty Pigott), grandsons (James and Reed Schacht), three nieces, and Beverly's brother (James Bunn). In addition to his parents and Beverly, Roy was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Causey.
