Ruth Wallace Hall Mercer of Blythewood, widow of Maxie Lee "Mac" Mercer, died Wednesday, October 2, 2013, ten days before her 89th birthday. The family will receive friends at Cedar Creek Baptist Church, Friday, October 4th, from 12 until 1 o'clock. The funeral service for Mrs. Mercer will begin at 1 o'clock, with The Rev. Dr. James W. Thompson III officiating. A brief graveside service will follow at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens, 2603 Two Notch Rd, Columbia. Memorials may be made to the church at 1920 Cedar Creek Rd, Blythewood, SC 29016.
Ruth was born October 12, 1924 in Columbia, SC, a daughter of the late Dallas Clyde Wallace and Bobbie Feagan Wallace. She was twice married, first to the late Otis Hall. Four sons survive that union, Douglas "Skip" Hall, David Hall and Timmy Hall, all of Blythewood, and Otis D. Hall of Eudora, KS. Ruth's second marriage was to the late Maxie Lee "Mac" Mercer and lasted 20 years until Mac's death. No children resulted from that union. Ruth retired from J B White's in Columbia after 24 years; and then worked for six years at the Cotton Mill Exchange gift shop of the SC State Museum.
In addition to her sons, Ruth is survived by a sister, Clydie Berry of North Myrtle Beach; and by her brother, Lt. Col. W. T. "Billy" Wallace, USAF, Ret. of Sumter; eight grandchildren, including triplets, Christopher, Katie, and Jimmy Hall of Eudora, KS, Christopher Guy Hall of Ridgeway, Shannon Hall Boineau of Garden City Beach, Tammy and Timothy Hall of Whitmire, and Leah Hall Veldhoven of Irmo; many great grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren; and one great, great grandchild. In addition to her parents and husbands, Ruth was preceded in death by a sister, Bobbie W. Humphries.
