Salvatore Galante, 94, of Columbia, died Friday, July 20, 2012. Born in Pittston, PA on September 12, 1917, he was a son of the late Gaetano Galante and Maria Schiandra Galante.
Mr. Galante, a longtime resident of Paramus, NJ, was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, The Knights of Columbus, VFW Post # 641, DAV, Catholic War Veterans and the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. After surviving the attack on Pearl Harbor, he was a proud Army veteran having served his country in the Pacific throughout the entirety of WWII.
Survivors include a son, Gary (Susan) Galante of Chattanooga, TN; daughters, Rosemarie (Jay) Matera of Columbia; Evelyn (Larry) Magas of Clayton, CA, Doreen Kurzum of Flanders, NJ; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Mr. Galante was preceded in death by his wife, Antoinette L. Galante; one sister and four brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Galante will be held at Twelve o'clock, Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church with Father C. Alexander McDonald officiating. Final Commendation and Farewell Prayers will be said at Two o'clock at Ft. Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia. A Prayer Service will be recited at 5 o'clock Tuesday July 24, led by Father C. Alexander McDonald with a visitation to follow until 7 o'clock at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia.
